In 2018 I was selected as Community Artist for the South East with Back from the Brink, a collaboration of conservation groups whose aim is to save 20 species from extinction and benefit over 200 more through 19 projects that span England; from the tip of Cornwall to Northumberland. Developing the Colour in the Margins project led to forays into creating inks from natural sources found amongst the Kent Downs.... invaluable research towards new drawings in earth pigments, oak gall, elderberry, buckthorn and sloe inks and chalk. I focused on primary and secondary arable species like the corn buttercup, small catchfly and corncockle, rapidly declining arable plants (you can see my studies of their wonderful seeds); and animals like the necklace ground beetle and the turtle dove; which needs arable plants for the seed it feeds on, and has greatly declined due to modern farming methods. The project culminated in a day of walking and drawing around farmland in the north downs near Rochester.
